Sportives are a new phenomenon across the UK, where participants enjoy the challenge of cycling a set distance on public roads, without the pressure of taking part in a competitive race.
In 2008 Shetland Wheelers helped host 2 sportive events, one in south Yell, and one based in Tingwall with the aim to promote cycling, raise money for charity and make a fun day of cycling for both individuals and families.
A choice of routes is given for riders of varying abilities and experience, and safety marshals and drink stations are positioned round the courses.
